01 / Before you call

Do you actually need a technician?

Sending a licensed tech to your house isn't cheap — for you or for us. Most no-cool calls are not emergencies. Run this list before you pay anyone to knock on your door.

Check your thermostat batteries.Low batteries are the number one cause of a “dead” system. Pop the front off, swap the batteries, wait two minutes.Make sure it's set to COOL, not FAN or HEAT.Sounds obvious. You'd be surprised how often it isn't. If the fan runs but the air isn't cold, this is why.Check the breaker at the panel.Find the breaker labelled for your AC. If it's tripped to the middle, flip it fully OFF, then fully ON. If it trips again immediately, stop and call us.Change the air filter.A clogged filter starves the system and can freeze the coil. If it's grey and matted, it's overdue. A frozen coil needs to thaw — turn the system OFF for two hours, then try again.Find the float switch / drain pan.If the drain line is clogged, the float switch shuts the system down on purpose. Empty the pan and clear the line if you can.Look at the outdoor unit.Is it running? Is it iced over? Is the condenser coil packed with dust and cottonwood? Clear debris from around it. If it's iced, turn the system OFF until it thaws.

The honest answer

If all six check out and you still have no cool air — now it's a real call.

Safety first

Stop and call a licensed technician if you smell gas or burning, see scorched wiring, have water pooling near the unit, or the breaker trips the moment you reset it. Do not open the electrical panel or handle refrigerant lines. That work is not a DIY job — and it's what the license is for.
